functional pottery for home, garden
Because of my love of playing in the dirt, gardening, growing my food, and cooking, the work I create in clay is primarily functional for home and garden.
The pieces I make are mostly formed on the pottery wheel. I use very little glaze or slip as I rely on the method of salt glazing, wherein the final glazing is part of the firing process.
I strive to bring to the items used in everyday life a connection between the artistic and functional. My hands to your hands. Salt glazing completes this expression covering the pots with a thin durable glaze, allowing form to be the emphasis, revealing rather than covering the natural texture and body of the clay.
In the process of salt glazing, sodium is induced into the kiln at the maturing temperature of the clay. It vaporizes and combines with the silica and alumina in the clay to form the glaze on the surface of everything it touches in the kiln during the firing. Along with my fascination with this process, I also make pieces that are wood fired and pit fired.
