You are invited to apply participate in Napa Valley Open Studios 2008. The Mission of Napa Valley Open Studios is to promote Napa Valley art through the opening of creative spaces across the county, to educate and inspire the community about Napa Valley art, and to support the livelihoods of working artists. Now in its 21st year, Open Studios has become a treasured experience for both locals and visitors in this beautiful valley.

Open Studios is a marketing opportunity for serious professional artists and a supportive environment to nurture and present new talent. The Open Studios tour includes two weekends of self-guided tours of artists' work places throughout the Napa Valley, an exhibition and kick-off reception at Mumm Napa Valley, local and Bay Area event advertising, and a free Artist Catalog with maps to visit participating artists' studios. Any artist and current ACNV member with a residence in Napa County may apply to participate in Open Studios. Artwork must be original and defined as fine art, not hobby crafts.

Open Studios also provides you with the opportunity to meet and work with fellow artists, to share resources and ideas and find collaborators. It is an opportunity to meet your community, and help celebrate and raise awareness about the dynamic visual arts in Napa Valley. Most importantly, it is the opportunity to demonstrate your craft, sell your work, and build relationships with your patrons.

Detailed program information, including program benefits, is available on this website: please refer to "Downloads" on the right side of this screen.

OPEN STUDIOS JURY PROCESS

Beginning this year, Open Studios will be a juried program. All applicants must be juried in. However, once an applicant has been juried in, he or she is in the program permanently. After this year, only new applicants will be subject to the jury process.

Why is Open Studios now a juried program? The strongest Open Studios programs all across the Bay Area are juried, for one simple reason: patrons report that "quality of art" is a major reason for attending Open Studios. Maintaining the quality of the work is essential to growing attendance, and attracting proficient artists to participate in the program. There will be no set number for the number of artists juried into the program. For more information on the OS Jury, please see "D: Jury Information" under Downloads.

ARTIST TECH HELP DAYS

To assist artists in creating digital images for the jury and Open Studios catalog, ACNV and Studio II are sponsoring "Artist Tech Help Days" on March 25th and 26th from 3-7 PM at Studio II Gallery, 570 Soscol Ave in Napa. On these days, artists can make appointments to have their work professionally photographed, and also to have those images uploaded directly to CaFÉ and the Open Studios website. Detailed information on the Help Days can be found in "A: Introduction and Benefits" under Downloads. For more information or to make an appointment, please click here to email us.

FEES

There is a $15 application fee due when images are submitted for the jury. The annual artist fee for Napa Valley Open Studios 2008 is $300, and is payable only upon acceptance by the 2008 Jury Panel to Napa Valley Open Studios.

Membership with ACNV is a requirement of all participating OS artists. Memberships begin at $25. Membership information can be found on the ACNV website at www.artscouncilnapavalley.org.

HOW TO APPLY

The application process begins with submitting to the jury. The jurying process will happen online, using a web-based service called Call for Entry (CaFÉ) at www.callforentry.org. Details about image submission are clearly outlined on the CaFÉ website; and technical help is also available (please see "Artist Tech Help Days" above.) To enter the jury, artists need to submit 4 digital images and an artist statement.

To begin the process, go to www.callforentry.org, and register. You will create a username and password and fill out a short form. Once you have registered, click on "Apply for Calls" and scroll down until you find "Napa Valley Open Studios 2008". Click on "apply to this call" and follow the directions. Details about image submission are clearly outlined on the CaFÉ website; information is also available on the right side of this screen under "Downloads".
